Thank you for the information; I'm following up and I've already found that Paxil depletes glutathione in body cells which in turn leads to glucose metabolism problems and possibly Type2 Diabetes. Based on personal experience, I think there is a connection between taking Paxil and the onset of Type 2 Diabetes. Now I'm looking for the evidence. For example, I was diagnosed within 6 months of starting Paxil and my HbA1c indicated that I had high blood glucose levels for at least 3 months earlier. A year earlier my HbA1c was fine. So the indications in my case are that the onset of Type 2 Diabetes was within 3 months of starting Paxil.
Coincidence? Maybe! At the very least, coincidence or not, more investigation is warranted. Also note that I can also personally attest that the withdrawal symptoms from Paxil are very severe. I plan to stop taking Paxil following the protocol advocated (which involve increasing my glutathione levels), I'm seeing my doctor on Monday morning to talk about what I'm planning, to initiate a glutathione level test, and to get her advice.
I will be documenting my experience in withdrawing from Paxil. I will also be pursuing my research into the the possible connection between Paxil and the onset of Type 2 Diabetes.

Malcolm, Just read your story on the internet as I was doing a quick search for someone that I met on the message board of a Paxil withdrawal site: http://forum.onecenter.com/paxilhelp. I hope that address works, sometimes it doesn't for me - it's a new address for the board. If not let me know, I'll find you the old address that will still take you there. There's a great withdrawal guide there, written by JB. Anyway, she's also been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
I've been researching Paxil for about 14 months and found a very clear connection between antidepressants and diabetes. Did you know that diabetes is the number one endocrine system related side effect of Paxil?! Has it ever crossed your mind that Paxil may have caused your diabetes. NO IT HADN'T, TILL NOW.
I've been on Paxil boards for over a year and have read many, many stories of people you've been diagnosed with the disease within a year or 2 of Paxil treatment. Use of Prozac, another anti-depressants that works very similarly to Paxil, has increased dramatically in the Mormon population in Utah - so has the rate of diabetes! There is a study that's been done on it - I'll try to find it if you like.
Also, Paxil can cause several different types of rashes - ALL in the listed side effects and ALL talked about by hundreds of people on the internet wondering if it's Paxil related. You had talked about a rash and didn't have any idea it could be Paxil. Also, the withdrawal can be extremely difficult (I KNOW) and the reason you had trouble when you tried to wean is NOT because of stress at work, although that could make it worse, I suppose. I only took Paxil for 5 days and didn't like how I felt, so quit. The next 12 days were SHEER HELL. The withdrawal problem is experienced by 50-75% of all those who try to discontinue use, NOT .2%, like GSK admits to.
Did you see the 20/20 segment on Paxil withdrawal last year? Let me know if you'd like a transcript. My sister had a massive hemorrhagic stroke after 3 days on Paxil - she was only 49. "Cerebrovascular accident" is also a side effect of Paxil - check it out. Nobody's warning patients about the problems associated with Paxil because the manufacturers have done such a great job of downplaying and so have their reps. Do a web search to find the real story about this problem. There are several class actions suits that have been filed - one very recently. Did you see it on the national news? Here's another withdrawal support board: www.paxilprogress.org I thought that it would be important for you to know this information.
One rule that ALL of us that really know what Paxil is capable of, go by...if you have problems while on the drug - SUSUPECT THE DRUG, because it's almost always the cause. Hey, you take Paxil, have probems you've NEVER had before - hmmmm? It's common sense, cause and effect. I hope that I've opened your eyes a bit about the possibilities.
Sincerely, Deb La Plante
